Most of Cambridgeshire already has three tiers of local government, now yet another tier has been added by the Conservatives – the ‘Combined Authority’ (CA) of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The Lib Dems believe that this is not a good idea! There will only be small financial benefits for our area, and there will be significant costs involved in its administration.
Lib Dems believe that it may be time for a more radical reorganization to reduce the costs of bureaucracy and allow us to provide more of the services people need and expect.
We believe we should investigate if all seven district and city councils could be abolished and be replaced by two unitary authorities (Peterborough and N-W Cambs, Cambridge and S-E Cambs).
More information on the Combined Authority and our initial ideas for reorganisation can be found HERE. These preliminary thoughts have been pulled together by Peter Downes. We will be developing our ideas and proposals with our Lib Dem colleagues over the coming months and will share these again when they are matured.
